Chasing Bubbles – setting and Achieving Goals

As a mom of three little ones, it never ceases to amaze me what they teach me.  I know that it is ultimately my job to teach them and train them to be good citizens and followers of Jesus, but that doesn’t mean I am not to learn a thing or two along the way.

The weather has finally been nice in Southern Illinois.  My mom and uncle so graciously bought our family a swing set for Easter, so we have been spending our time outside swinging and sliding and jumping on the mini trampoline.  It has been so great to get outdoors and run around.

One of our favorite things to do has been chasing bubbles.  My kids have always loved this activity, and now that they are big enough to blow their own bubbles, that makes for fun and laughter from us all.

Just this last week, as I was sitting out there and blowing bubbles to their delight, I had quite a thought hit me.  Chasing bubbles is a lot like setting goals.

Setting and acheiving goals

We have to set goals and purpose to chase them otherwise we will never accomplish anything in life.  We have to take a moment to decide what it is we want to do, and then take the steps to get them.

As I watched them run and laugh with glee, I realized that much like chasing bubbles can wear them down, so can chasing our goals and dreams.  Because it matters what we focus on.

As Ryan bent over to get a bubble that had rested on the grass, I thought about how if we just focus on what is below us, or maybe the circumstances from our past, we will never get any higher.  We are too busy looking at things that don’t need our attention.

Then there are the goals that are right within our grasp.  It is good to accomplish these and learn from them.  Pop them and go on to the next one.  When I decided to get back to health, I had to stop looking at what I used to do, and look right where I was.  I had to make small, measurable goals and go after them, popping them one by one.

But what about the goals that are too high for us now?  The ones that are over our heads? Well, we need to take the steps to reach them, or wait for them to come down to our level.  When they get there, we will crush them, and then move on to the next goal.

Life can be a series of goals.  Some are easier than others to attain.  But just like chasing bubbles can be both fun and exhausting, so can setting and accomplishing goals.

It is all a matter of perspective, what we focus on.  Because I spend my days doing what I can to focus on good, Godly things, I don’t get as overwhelmed as when I spend my days focusing on the bad and ugly things. Yes, there is a time do that, to not stick our heads in the sand, but to be proactive in the world we live in.  But keep your focus up, not down.

And why not spend a little time chasing some bubbles with your kids?
